Congenital urethral dilatation in calves

Diagnosis

         1-Case history & clinical signs

           1-Congenital condition

           2-Dysuria          

           3-Swelling in the perineal region appear few days after birth

          

         2-Clinical examination

             urine was voided from the external urethral orifice           

             when the swelling was manually compressed

          3-Exploratory puncture gave urine

          
           4-Rectal examination

             The bladder is somewhat distended

           5-Radiographic examination

             Urethral enlargement can be determined using I/V

             injection  of  1 ml /Kg  B.wt  of   urographin

           6-Ultrasonography

             Swelling filled with clear fluid mixed on the periphery

             with fiber  – thick capsule

 Differential diagnosis

         -  Abscess                    - Hematoma

        

 Treatment

    Surgically by Urethrostomy :  A  permanent urethral fistula

    The treatment for a period of time to reach

    acceptable slaughter condition

Technique:

      1- Pre-operative technique

            - washing    - clipping & shaving   - disinfection

      2- The animal is kept in lateral recumbency (the operation may be done in standing position)

      3- Anesthesia

          Local infiltration of 2% Lidocaine Hcl

      4- Incision the skin

      5- Incision in the urethra & urine will  be voided
         from the seat of urethral incision and this is
        an indication that the bladder is intact and
        the technique advances in successful manner

      6-The wall of the urethra is sutured with the skin by silk

         in a simple interrupted manner

      8-The animal will urinate through the
         urethral fistula 

      9- Post operative care:
        - Antibiotic    
        -Fluid therapy
